چکیده
Journal of Medical Device Regulation May 2006 The third edition of IEC 60601-1 represents a major overhaul of the IEC 60601 family of medical electrical equipment safety standards. First published in 1977, IEC 60601-1 has become the ‘bible’ of electromedical equipment safety and the parent standard of over 60 particular device standards ranging from diagnostic electrocardiographs to electron accelerators used in radiotherapy.

Software verification and validation: the role of IEC 60601-1.
When biomedical engineers begin to conceptualize a new medical device, verification and validation (V&V) is usually at the forefront of their thoughts. They want to start the effort well by making sure that they have the right tools and processes in place for “building the product right,” and they want to be able to conclude their efforts by demonstrating that they’ve “built the right product” ...

BACKGROUND We tested melodic auditory alarms recommended in the IEC 60601-1-8 standard for medical electrical equipment for ease of learning and discrimination, and for effectiveness during a timeshared task. METHODS Twenty-two critical care nurses learned the IEC 60601-1-8 melodic alarms over two training sessions more than a week apart, with or without mnemonics suggested in the standard. S...
متن کاملTesting New Alarms for Medical Electrical Equipment
This paper reports the first of several tests of new auditory alarms originally proposed by Block et al. [1] and formalized in IEC 60601-1-8 for use in medical electrical equipment. We test whether participants who are supplied with the IEC-recommended mnemonics while learning label-alarm associations can more accurately identify the alarms after short periods of learning. Results for 18 partic...
متن کاملLearnability and discriminability of melodic medical equipment alarms.
Melodic alarms proposed in the IEC 60601-1-8 standard for medical electrical equipment were tested for learnability and discriminability. Thirty-three non-anaesthetist participants learned the alarms over two sessions of practice, with or without mnemonics suggested in the standard. Fewer than 30% of participants could identify the alarms with 100% accuracy at the end of practice. Confusions pe...
متن کاملAuditory Alarms, Medical Standards, and Urgency
A newly-released international standard for medical equipment alarms, IEC 60601-1-8, incorporates a long-standing suggestion that alarms should indicate their source through distinctive melodies. In this paper we examine this suggestion. We describe the proposed alarms, outline the history of the idea, and review recent research on the effectiveness of the alarms, some of it performed in our la...
